Talking to The Wall Street Journal’s Digits blog, Intel' CTO Justin Rattner described the current explosion of open software platforms, tens of thousands of new apps, and people doing computing on a plethora of mobile devices, as a "Wild Wild West" - meaning, per Rattner, that security will be the next big thing in computing.
“How do we take an open platform and selectively close it, protect crucial parts of the code from attack and keep secrets even if the software is compromised? It seems like an impossible task. But we think we know how to do it,” Rattner said, adding that super-secure technology is still “several years out.”
Intel’s other big challenge, Rattner added, is the continuing fight to aggressively lower the power needs of mobile chips. Rattner said a lot of efficiencies could be found outside the processor itself: “If you actually look at the communications circuits in the phones, they’re horribly inefficient. We’re working on technology that replaces the analog elements of the [communications hardware] with all digital elements … It’s easily twice the efficiency.”
